Study Abroad: China 2012

Summer I: 3 credit hours
Dates: May 14 - 26, 2012

This trip will provide CJ students with an overview of China's law enforcement system and will explore historical and contemporary policing issues by exchanges with police cadets, interacting with police professionals, and visiting major and local police departments. In addition, this course will introduce the students to Chinese culture, customs, and cuisine. Some of the cultural & historic sites to be visited are:

Hangzhou: West Lake, Linyin Temple, Leifeng Pagoda, & National Tea Museum Putuo Mountain Xitang Ancient Town

Shanghai: Oriental Pearl TV Tower, the Bund (Wai Tan), Nang Jing Road, Jade Buddha Temple, Yu Garden, Huangpu River Cruise, & Museum of Contemporary Art

Cost:

  • $1,500 (includes: visa application fees, accommodations, most meals, local transportation, and museum entry, etc.)
  • Airfare ($1,000-1,400 roundtrip Houston-Shanghai)
  • 3 hours tuition and fees
  • Scholarships are available

Reservations:

To reserve a seat in the class, please complete the CJ Study Abroad application and present a check made payable to SHSU for $100 as a non-refundable deposit (due by April 1, 2012) for the China 2012 study abroad class.

May 15th Tuesday - Arrive at the Zhejiang Police College (ZPC)

  • Check into the College Hotel
  • Dinner in Hotel Dining Room

May 16th Wednesday - Campus tour, the College History Museum, Lecture, & Academic exchange with police cadets in Zhejiang Police College

  • Walking Tour of Campus and the College History Museum
  • Lecture “Community oriented policing in China” by Associate Prof. Zhan Wancheng
  • Lunch at Hotel Dining Room
  • Academic exchange: Presentations & Discussion on “Law enforcement in the U.S. and China
  • Welcoming Banquet hosted by ZPC

May 17th Thursday - Linyin Temple, Leifeng Pagoda,  & West Lake Area

  • Breakfast in Hotel

  • Lecture “Crimes Committed By Transient Population in China” by Associate Prof. Qiu Yu
  • Lunch at Hotel Academic exchange: Presentations & Discussion on “Law enforcement in the U.S. and China

May 19th Saturday - Putuo Mountain Island

May 20th Sunday - Putuo Mountain Island

  • Tour of Putuo Mountain

  • Travel back to Zhejiang Police College
  • Dine at Hotel Dining Room

May 21st Monday - Jiashan City Police Department & Xitang Ancient Town

  • Breakfast in Hotel
  • Tour of Jiashan City Police Department, 911 Center, and Police Substation
  • Lunch at Jiashan City Police Department
  • Xitang Ancient Town on the Water
  • Dine at a local restaurant at Xitang Ancient Town, hosted by Jiashan City Police Department

May 22nd Tuesday - National Silk Museum, National Tea Museum, & Qing He Fang Street

  • Breakfast in Hotel
  • National Silk Museum
  • National Tea Museum
  • Lunch in the Downtown area
  • Shop in the Qing He Fang Street
  • Farewell Banquet & Issue the Certificate by the ZPC

May 23rd Wednesday - Travel to Shanghai by high-speed train

  • Dinner at a restaurant in the downtown area

May 24th Thursday - Jade Buddha Temple, Yu Garden, & Museum of Contemporary Art
