Crime Victims' Institute

The Crime Victims' Institute is a state-appropriated research unit whose legislative mandate is to serve victims in Texas by conducting research to better understand victimization, improve victim services, assist crime victims, and inform local- and state-level policy.

Sam Houston State University is also home to the nation’s first Department of Victim Studies under the College of Criminal Justice. In addition to the work already being done in the Criminal Justice and Criminology department, the Department of Victim Studies will continue the commitment in advancing research on victimization issues in Texas and training the next generation of professionals.

Bachelor's Degree in Victim Studies: Undergraduate students majoring in Victim Studies may earn either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree. The coursework is designed to prepare students for employment in all areas of victim services.

Master of Science in Victim Services Management: This degree is designed to prepare graduates to work in various areas of victim services, including but not limited to, direct service provision (e.g., advocacy, etc.), organizational management, and social policy development.
