Dr. Rolando del Carmen is a Distinguished Professor of Criminal Justice (Law). Del Carmen is one of the nation's leading experts on criminal justice law, and he is recognized nationally and internationally for his longstanding contributions to the criminal justice discipline. He has published many books, book chapters and articles in law and is among the top in his field with productivity and quality of work. His publications include liabilities and the rights of police, probation and parole officers; community-based corrections; Texas juvenile law and practice; constitutional issues of "Three Strikes" legislation; legal issues in drug testing of offenders and criminal justice employees; and the use of force in policing. He has received numerous top awards from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, including the Academy Fellow Award (1990), the Bruce Smith Sr. Award (1997) and the Founders Award (2005). He has also served as a consultant to criminal justice agencies in various states and lectured extensively in more than 40 states and internationally. He officially retired from the university in May 2012, but still teaches a graduate law seminar during the fall semester.
