Leadership Luncheon — April 27, 2006

At 11:00 a.m., April 27, 2006, the College of Criminal Justice recognized distinguished students, alumni, and faculty at the 2006 leadership luncheon. Sample photos from the event are below.

Dr. Charles M. Friel, Distinguished Professor Emeritus, this year's recipient of the Defensor Pacem Medal, is presented with his award. Dr. Friel retired from the University in August, 2005, after 38 years of service. His legacy within this institution and especially his college is assured. He has earned a rare distinction as a superb scholar, an outstanding administrator and a dedicated teacher. Dr. Friel's work and the extraordinary respect and admiration he has earned is acknowledged by his colleagues, both nationally and internationally. The Defensor Pacem Medal is the most pretigious award presented by the faculty and staff to an individual who has provided invaluable service to the Criminal Justice Center in achieving its mission. Dr. Friel was presented with the award last October, and the faculty unanimously elected to publicly honor him again at his year's leadership luncheon.

Janie Cockrell receives the Outstanding Alumnus Award from presenter Dr. Longmire. Ms. Cockrell began her career with the Texas Department of Corrections as a correctional officer in 1979. She served the Agency in a variety of capacities and was recognized for her dedication to her profession by being promoted through the ranks. In 2001, Cockrell was named the Institutional Division Director (the first female to hold this position), managing 73 facilities and overseeing the security needs of approximately 145,000 offenders. The retired from the TDCJ-ID in August, 2003, after 27 years of service. Ms. Cockrell received her BS in criminology and corrections from SHSU in 1977.
