International Police Program

Study Abroad in Poland by Joey Sanders

At this time, I am less than one week removed from traveling over-seas to Poland as a fortunate participant in the 2007 "Study Abroad" program offered by The Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas and Sam Houston State University . Personally, it is difficult to describe in words my experiences abroad, for this was my first visit to Europe .

Webster defines experience as something done, seen, or taken part in. It is also defined as the events lived through by an individual or group. As an adjective, it is described as participation or observation leading to knowledge or skill. With that said, let me attempt to capture a glimpse of the wonderful "experience" I had while visiting Poland .

From its outset, any student and/or practitioner will realize that the Polish people are extremely passionate for their country and heritage. I want to thank each of the Polish administrators who took time from their personal schedules to make our group feel welcome. The Polish National Police were gracious hosts that offered insight into a newly formed democratic police system created in less than 20 years. I was impressed with the effectiveness of police training for all Polish officers comparative to what is found in the States. From forensics to defensive tactics our group was made privy to a well structured and organized form of training consistent with excellence. It was obvious to me that there is definite sense of unity which stems from a centralized police force.

The trip was not without several sightseeing excursions to beautiful cities thought the central and southern regions of Poland . We visited the Warsaw , Legionowo, Piotrkow Trybunalski City , Czestochowa , Zloty Potok, and Sulkowice. We also spent two days in Krakow with a side trip to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial. Auschwitz-Birkenau was an extremely moving experience, and I recommend it to any visitor of Poland . Each city had its own unique qualities and beauty. From castles to museums, Poland is truly breathtaking. If you are fortunate to take this once-in-a-lifetime trip, I would suggest that you bring plenty of film and plan on going on a diet upon your return.you will not be disappointed.

On a personal note, I want to thank Executive Director Dr. Rita Watkins for her time, patience and generosity with our group. It's my belief that the participants of this "experience" were successful in building a foundation for lasting personal as well as professional relationships. Without her guidance, I do not believe this would have been possible. For this, I thank you.

Sincerely,

Joey Sanders
