Institute for Legal Studies in Criminal Justice (ILSCJ)
Creation:
After approval of the College of Criminal Justice faculty, Dean Vincent Webb, Provost David Payne, and President James Gaertner, the Institute for Legal Studies in Criminal Justice (ILSCJ) was created during October 2006 within the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University.
- Increasing faculty mentorship, particularly of graduate students, on legal research and publication.
- Identifying and discussing pedagogical issues in the teaching of law in criminal justice programs.
- Bridging the gap between academia and the field of criminal justice on issues and concerns related to law.
- Making the College of Criminal Justice a magnet for students interested in issues related to criminal justice and law.
- Providing an umbrella unit that coordinates the legal research and publications of faculty and students.
- Exploring opportunities in the CJ Center and elsewhere for legally oriented collaborative research.
Structure:
ILSCJ is sponsored by the College of Criminal Justice at SHSU. Rolando V. del Carmen and Michael S. Vaughn serve as co-directors. Law faculty within the College include: D.C. Jim Dozier, Jerry L. Dowling, and Phillip M. Lyons, Jr. The co-directors are assisted by Ph.D. research assistants: Claire Nolasco, and Ling Wu.
