The following scholarships are currently available through the College of Criminal Justice.

The 100 Club Scholarships

The following thirteen scholarships were established by the 100 Club to assist undergraduate students seeking degrees in law enforcement:

The Law Enforcement Assistance Program (LEAP) is available to law enforcement officers majoring in criminal justice and employed by an agency in Austin, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, Waller or Walker County. These scholarships are available to both male and female law enforcement majors, junior standing or above, who have completed at least one long semester at Sam Houston State University, enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours, and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0.

Alpha Phi Sigma Scholarship

The Alpha Phi Sigma-Phi Chapter Scholarship is awarded to a male or female member of the criminal justice organization who has completed 43 hours, of which 12 are in criminal justice, is enrolled in 12 semester hours, and has an overall grade point average of 3.0 with a 3.2 grade point average in criminal justice.

ASIS International Houston Chapter John Tullie Brady Scholarship in Security Management Studies

The John Tullie Brady Scholarship is available to a senior majoring in criminal justice that plans to pursue a career in law enforcement. Students must maintain a grade point average of 2.5. Security Studies. A recipient must be a senior majoring in Criminal Justice planning to pursue a career in Law Enforcement and maintain an overall GPA of 2.5 or above.

Brandon Ashley Memorial Scholarship

The Brandon Ashley Memorial Scholarship is available to a Senior majoring in criminal justice who plans to pursue a career in law enforcement. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.

Bob Worley and Linnie Gisi Criminal Justice Scholarship

Recipient (or recipients) must be a full-time undergraduate student majoring in Criminal Justice maintaining a minimum overall GPA of 3.5. Preference will be given to students who work part-time or full-time as a correctional officer.

Charles M. Friel Scholarship, Victor G. Strecher Scholarship, George G. Killinger Scholarship, and Margaret Farnworth Scholarship

These scholarships are granted for the fall and spring semesters to academically deserving undergraduate or graduate students in the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.

Chris Pickren Memorial Scholarship

Clay Dyer Criminal Justice Undergraduate Scholarship

The Clay Dyer Criminal Justice Undergraduate Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to determined Pottsboro High School or Grayson County Community College students who desire to pursue higher education in criminal justice at Sam Houston State University. Recipient must have applied for and been admitted as an undergraduate criminal justice major of Sam Houston State University, and must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0.

Dan Richard Beto Endowed Scholarship in Correctional Leadership

The Dan Richard Beto Endowed Scholarship is available to a full-time graduate or doctoral student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University and whose area of study is institutional or community corrections. The student must be from a foreign country and plan to teach at an institution of higher learning or work for an institutional or community corrections agency. Financial need will be a consideration, but not a determining factor.

Diane Cochran Criminal Justice Scholarship

Recipient must be an undergraduate or graduate student in good standing at SHSU entering an internship at a Criminal Justice agency, having completed two long semesters at SHSU. Applicants must demonstrate financial need as determined by the Coordinator of the Criminal Justice Internship Program and the College of Criminal Justice Student Development Committee. GPA requirement 2.5.

Donald J. Weisenhorn Criminal Justice Scholarship

Amount varies; Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student, majoring in Criminal Justice, and be sophomore or above. GPA requirement 3.0.

Edward Glenn Owens Scholarship

George J. Beto Memorial Scholarship

The George J. Beto Memorial Scholarship is available to an international student or a member of a minority group (including women), who has demonstrated financial need and has satisfactorily met the standard entrance requirements established by the University. The student must be enrolled as a full-time criminal justice student at Sam Houston State University. Preference is given to especially needy students from lower-income families. Special consideration will be given to "first generation" college students. Preference will be given to undergraduate students, although graduate students will not be precluded. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.

James C. Boswell Memorial Scholarship

The James C. Boswell Scholarship may be granted for the fall and spring semesters to deserving undergraduate students in the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University who have demonstrated financial need and who are seeking to pursue a degree in law enforcement or affiliated criminal justice disciplines. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.

Jared Grant Memorial Scholarship

The Jared Grant Memorial Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to an undergraduate student in good standing, enrolled at Sam Houston State University and employed by the Criminal Justice Center. Students must maintain a grade point average of 2.5.

Jason W. Stachey Criminal Justice Scholarship

Recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student majoring in Criminal Justice and demonstrate financial need. Entering freshmen must meet the minimum SAT/ACT score for undergraduate admissions. GPA requirement is 3.0

Justin DeSpain Criminal Justice Memorial Scholarship

Was established in 2005 by the DeSpain family and members of Lambda Alpha Epsilon (LAE) in memory of Justin. Must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good standing enrolled at SHSU and majoring in CJ with preference given to undergraduate students; maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.5; financial need is a consideration, but not a determining factor. PREFERENCE will be given to Lambda Alpha Epsilon Members.

Justin Perdue Memorial Scholarship

Recipient must be an undergraduate student majoring in criminal justice at SHSU. GPA requirement 2.5.

Kelly Harris Memorial Scholarship and Wayland D. Pilcher Memorial Scholarship

These scholarships are granted for the fall and spring semesters to academically deserving undergraduate students in the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University . Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.

Lambda Alpha Epsilon Scholarship

The LAE scholarship was created in 2008 by the Delta Chi Chapter of the American Criminal Justice Association of Lambda Alpha Epsilon for a full-time or part-time sophomore, junior or senior student and must be an initiated member of LAE in good standing for a minimum of one semester and be serving as an officer or have served in the past as an officer of LAE.  Must has an overall GPA of 3.0 and a 3.2

Lt. C.E. Jordan, Sr. Scholarship

The Lt. C.E. Jordan, Sr. Scholarship may be granted for the fall and spring semesters only, to male or female criminal justice majors enrolled as an undergraduate at Sam Houston State University. Students receiving the scholarships must maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average in their studies, and must be enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours at Sam Houston State University, unless employed full time as a peace officer, in which case they must be enrolled in at least 9 semester hours. Other requirements of the scholarship are that the recipient be: (1) a United States Citizen and permanent resident of Texas; (2) a son, daughter, or legal ward of any peace officer or individual employed in areas related to or affiliated with the criminal justice field; (3) under 25 years of age, unless employed full time as a police officer, in which case the age limit is waived.

Melissa Renee Sinclair Criminal Justice Scholarship

The Melissa Renee Sinclair Criminal Justice Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to students majoring in criminal justice at Sam Houston State University with at least 72-80 semester hours earned. Recipient must be able to demonstrate financial need for scholarship and maintain an overall grade point average of 2.5.

Merlyn D. Moore Criminal Justice Scholarship

Recipient must be an entering freshman or a current full-time student enrolled at SHSU and majoring in Criminal Justice; demonstrate financial need; and demonstrate a strong academic background. Preference will be given to those students who are actively participating in any Criminal Justice organization.

Michael Schultze Scholarship

The Michael Schultze Scholarship is available to a criminal justice major, junior standing or above, who has completed at least one long semester at Sam Houston State University, enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours, and has a minimum grade point average of 3.0.

Michelle A. Edwards Memorial Scholarship

Must be a full-time junior or senior in the fall semester and in good standing majoring in victims studies. Must maintain a 3.0 overall and a minimum of 3.25 in major. Financial need is a consideration but not a determining factor.

National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution

The National Society for the Daughters of the American Revolution Scholarship is available to a male or female criminal justice major. The recipient must be a sophomore, junior, or senior who has made a commitment to a criminal justice affiliated discipline. Recipients must meet the entrance requirements of the University and exhibit exceptional academic ability as certified by the scholarship committee. Recipients must possess high moral standards, and must have exemplified through high school and into college the qualities of maturity, community, leadership, and appreciation of the country. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.

O.B. Ellis and Philip Gibbs, M.D. Memorial Scholarship

The Ellis-Gibbs Memorial Scholarship is available to female criminal justice majors between 21-45 of age who have attained a minimum of junior level undergraduate standing or are candidates for or working towards master's or doctoral degrees. Preference will be given to scholarship candidates with experience in the criminal justice profession. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.

Rolando V. Del Carmen Criminal Justice Scholarship

Recipient must be a current full-time graduate student enrolled in the College of Criminal Justice at SHSU; demonstrate financial need; and demonstrate strong academic achievement.

R.W. Gordy Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund

Determining factor is financial need. Need to be a citizen of the United States; a full-time student majoring in criminal justice at SHSU and pursuing a career in law enforcement in the United States; maintain a minimum of 2.5 GPA.

Sarah Janine Cleary and Michael Griffin Cleary Scholarship

Griffin Cleary Scholarship is available to an undergraduate student who is majoring in criminal justice, who has demonstrated financial need and has satisfactorily met the standard entrance requirements established by the university. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0.

Shane Bennett Memorial Scholarship

The Shane Bennett Memorial Scholarship is available to a sophomore, junior or senior who is majoring in a criminal justice discipline and must maintain an overall grade point average of 2.5.  Preference will be given to those students who are studying in the field of law enforcement.

Stacy Countz Memorial Scholarship

Was established in Stacy’s memory by her parents, Mike and Patti Counts. Stacy was a student in the College of Criminal Justice at the time of her unexpected death. Male or Female being a full-time undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at SHSU majoring in Criminal Justice maintaining a GPA of 2.5 or above.

Steve Moore Memorial Scholarship

The Steve Moore Memorial Scholarship is available to a male or female criminal justice major, junior standing or above, who has completed at least one long semester at Sam Houston State University, is enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours, and has a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Both need and scholarship are considered.

Susan L. Canfield Memorial Endowment Scholarship

The Susan L. Canfield Memorial Endowment Scholarship was established in 2008 in memory of Ms. Canfield who lost her life while trying to apprehend two prisoners. Upon her death her fellow officers of the Wynne Unity resolved to establish an endowed scholarship in her memory in order that her sacrifice in the line of duty would never b e forgotten. May be granted to a full time or part-time (minimum of nine hours per semester) undergraduate or graduate student (minimum of six hours per semester) in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University and majoring in Criminal Justice and demonstrates financial need; and maintains a minimum overall GPA of 2.0.

Target Scholarship of Excellence

The Target Scholarship of Excellence will be awarded to three (3) students. One award will be given to a freshman who will be classified as a sophomore for the following academic year; another award will be given to a sophomore who will be classified as a junior the following academic year; another award will be given to a junior who will be classified as a senior the following academic year. The recipient must (1) be a student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University majoring in Criminal Justice; and (2) maintain an overall GPA of 3.0. Applicants will also be asked to provide a written response to one question agreed upon by the scholarship selection committee and the Donor representatives.

Todd Gibbs Memorial Scholarship

The Todd Gibbs Memorial Scholarship was established in 2008 by the Gibbs family in memory of Sgt. 1st Class Todd Gibbs who gave the ultimate sacrifice on December 7, 2004.  Sgt. Gibbs was killed in action in Khalidiyah, Iraq fighting for our country.  Todd died a hero.  While we may never be able to repay Todd for his ultimate sacrifice, we can continue to find ways to preserve his memory and honor his legacy.  May be awarded to a fulltime, minimum of 12 hours, undergraduate student in good standing enrolled at Sam Houston State University, majoring in CJ and demonstrates financial need and maintains a minimum overall GPA 2.50.  Special consideration will be given to ROTC members.

Tom Broussard, Ph.D. Memorial Endowed Scholarship

The Thomas Broussard Ph.D. Memorial Scholarship honors Dr. Tom Broussard, an outstanding alumnus of Sam Houston State University, and a criminal justice professional who served in 1990 and 1991 as the Director of Juvenile Services and Chief Probation Officers for Dallas County.  The scholarship was established in May of 1991 by Ms. H. Pamela Schoch, the wife of the late Dr. Broussard in his memory and as a tribute to Dr. Broussard’s accomplishment sin criminal Justice.  Preferable a grad student and Corrections background, Tom was a probation officer.  May be granted for the fall and spring semesters only, to academically deserving graduate and/or undergraduate students at Sam Houston State University must maintain a GPA of 3.0
